Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)™ is the most widely used and accepted instrument for understanding your own work style and appreciating the differences between your style and other styles. It is based on the psychological theories of Carl Jung and his observations about the differences in the way that people gather information and make decisions. These differences can make it difficult for people to work well together.

The MBTI is commonly used to:

  • Increase understanding of personal strengths
  • Improve work relationships between staff
  • Expand group decision-making processes
  • Strengthen the ability of individuals to work well in teams
  • Extend staff information about the Member’s style preferences

Objective

The MBTI is most frequently used by congressional offices as a part of team building for the entire staff or as a tool to improve working relationships among key staff (often among senior management staff and/or between senior staff and the Member).

Process

The MBTI is based on a 93-item instrument that typically takes 20 minutes to complete. The instruments are completed and scored in advance of a half- or full- day seminar that explains the theory, helps staff interpret their results, and creates a full-office profile.

MBTI is best administered in conjunction with other staff retreat activities, including team building, strategic planning, and improving office operations, so staff can understand how their personal styles may influence how they approach upcoming office activities.

Cost

The cost to a congressional office for the preparation and facilitation of a Myers-Briggs assessment is $1,700 for the assessment and a half-day debriefing session with staff. If additional exercises or facilitated discussions are incorporated, CMF’s rate for facilitating a one-day retreat - $3,000 - will apply. There is an additional $35 per person to administer and score the instrument and provide participant materials.

If the session is held in the district or state, there will be an additional charge for travel time, and all transportation and lodging expenses are also paid by the office.
