Executive Coaching

The Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) offers Executive Coaching for the Member or Senator, and for senior staff in House and Senate offices.

Objective

The objective of Executive Coaching is to provide a confidential forum in which Members of Congress or one or more of their senior aides can receive highly personalized support for their development as a leader or manager.

Process

The Executive Coaching process involves the following steps, tailored to the needs of the individuals being coached:

  1. Establish goals for the coaching process.
  2. Assess the strengths and development needs of those to be coached.
  3. Give the individual(s) feedback on what has been observed.
  4. Conduct structured meetings to coach the individual towards achieving his/her goals.
  5. Utilize a combination of techniques to help the individual develop the skills and strategies needed to achieve the established goals.
  6. Provide further observation and support to help the individual apply the desired skills to situations that arise in the performance of their role.
  7. Evaluate progress made and strategies for maintaining and building on this progress.

Scheduling

A coaching process that involves one or two principals (Member and Chief of Staff, Chief of Staff and other key staff member, etc.) will usually require three to six months to realize the desired benefits. Initially, meetings will occur every week or two and then be spaced further apart.

Cost

CMF offers the first coaching session free of charge to congressional offices to assess whether coaching would be an effective means for accomplishing one's goals. The cost to the congressional office for a coaching engagement depends on the scope and depth of the work but typically can be accomplished for about $5,000 to $8,000.
